Responding discourse providing special island for Rohingya refugees, Ministry of Social Affairs is still studying it.
"Still need time to study it," said Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa, met after a visit to Pondok Pesantren Al Anwar, Modung, Bangkalan, Madura, East Java, on Sunday (07/06/2015).
According to him, the new special island will be assessed after the Indonesian government gave a decent place for orphaned Rohingya. "If they (the orphans) is completed, then the task we stay thinking about the fate of other refugees will be placed where," he said.
However, the placement of Rohingya refugees is not necessarily in a particular island. According to him, the Rohingya refugee camps that exist today still quite feasible.
"The location is now still considered adequate when compared to other refugee camps overseas," he said.
Earlier, observers of international law from the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, suggested the government provide special island for Rohingya refugees.
"Special island could be used to accommodate while selecting the refugees to be placed in the country willing to accept. The existence of the island specifically to ensure that the men would not mingle with local residents," said Hikmahanto.
