Armed Group Hostage Thousands of People in Papua

1,300 Villagers of Binti and Kimbley Villages, Tembagapura Sub-district, Mimika District, Papua, have been held hostage by the Armed Kriminal Group (KKB). The hostage taking was carried out by the KKB against 1300 residents since four days ago.

Police Headquarters called the members of the armed group complete only amounted to 20 to 25. Police in cooperation with the TNI lowered the Integrated Task Force.TNI Commander-in-Chief TNI Gatot Nurmantyo admitted TNI will use the persuasive way through negotiations so that there should be no casualties.

"Currently TNI is conducting observations and surveillance, because the hostage is the general public, then the handling must be clearly identified," said General Gatot Nurmantyo.

It is not the first time that armed groups in Papua have taken civilians hostage. The most famous is Mapenduma Event.Monday 8 January 1996 became a nightmare for 12 Lorentz team researchers who were collecting data in Mapenduma, Papua. Hundreds of members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) led by Daniel Yudas Kogoya kidnapped them from the base camp.

OPM commander Kelly Kwalik tried to exchange the 12 hostages with Papuan independence. Because it involves a foreign citizen, this event becomes the international spotlight. During the capture, the hostages were herded into the wilderness of Papua. They do not get enough food, so some people get sick.

TNI headquarters held a task force to free the hostages in Mapenduma. Commander-in-Chief of Kopassus then Brigjen Prabowo Subianto was appointed commander. The Kopassus team deployed came from Group 5 Antiteror in black uniform. In addition there are troops Battalion Kostrad 330 Airborne Traffic and troop trap consisting of the sons of Irian's Kodam Cendrawasih. Total troops deployed reached 600 people.

But according to international demand, Prabowo invited the International Committee of the Red Cross team to negotiate. Initially Kelly Kwalik showed good faith. They intend to release some sick hostages, including pregnant Martha Klein. But when the seconds of the release of the hostage, Kelly Kwalik suddenly changed. He made a loud speech.

"I asked for sweet potatoes to be sweet potatoes instead of asking for sweet potatoes."That is clear, the absolute price independence for Kelly. The hostages and the ICRC team are lethargic, they are aware of this tortuous negotiation taking a dead end.So Brigadier Prabowo immediately moved the troops when he heard the green light.Surveillance by air is done continuously. An unmanned aircraft that can detect body heat is used. Not an easy matter to trace the hostage traces in the middle of Papua's wilderness. But the TNI kept pressuring them.

The oppressive OPM continues to move into the forest. In panic, on 15 May the OPM killed two members of Team Lorentz, Navy and Matheis massacred with axes. Apparently they intend to kill all hostages who come from Indonesia and only take hostage of foreign nationals. Hysterically the rest of the hostages ran for safety.

The next event is very dramatic. In desperation they met the troops of Linud 330 Kostrad who had tried to follow them for days. Captain Agus Rochim's troops found sweets and sanitary napkins scattered in the forest. The two objects added to their beliefs not far from the hostages.

"We are TNI Battalion 330," shouted one of the troops when meeting the hostages. The tension of the hostages turned into a sense of relief. They have been rescued by the elite of green berets.Captain Agus ordered his troops to make parameters and protect the surviving hostages. The Yon 330 troops repeatedly fired weapons to prevent the OPM from approaching.

But he decided not to pursue or search for the two hostages killed. The reason is clear, the strength of OPM troops is unknown. They will also try hard to take hostages that are now in the hands of the TNI.

"My army is only 25 people, it must be divided into two one guarding across the river, another one is protecting the hostages," said Agus. The powerful team spent the night in the forest overnight. Bad weather and fog cause visibility only five meters deep in the forest. Captain Agus continues to call for reinforcements."We are still in a state of tension, both former hostages and Battalion 330 remain on guard against the possibility of the GPK-OPM who are eager to seize the hostages," said Adinda Arimbi Saraswati, one of the hostages recounted the tension of the night.Adinda's experience was written in the Hostage book, 130 Days trapped in Mapenduma published Sinar Harapan in 1997.

Luckily there was no attack that night. The next morning, additional Kopassus team personnel arrived. They served to secure the location and evacuate the bodies of Navy and Matheis. All the hostages were evacuated by helicopter. After 130 days of taking hostage,
